An official welcome back as we finally have all five of our calendars in session! Below is a listing of resources and information to share with your parents/ school communities, including Back-to-School Conference THIS SATURDAY, Common Core overview, parent academies, 2011-12 results, and subscription-based newsletters to stay connected with WCPSS:

WCPSS to host Back-to-School Kick Off for parents Saturday Wake County parents are invited to the first Parent Academy Back-to-School Kick Off, a fun morning of activities to help families start another great school year. The goal of the event is to strengthen the important connection between Wake County families and schools, and empower parents to be more involved in their children's education. Parents will attend a series of workshops while children ages 4 to 13 participate in free educational activities. Free continental breakfast will be provided. The first 100 parents will also receive free reusable Harris Teeter shopping totes, and the first 100 children accompanied by an adult will receive a coupon for a free Chili's kid's meal. What: Parent Academy Back-to-School Kick Off When: 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, September 8 Where: Millbrook Magnet High School, 2201 Spring Forest Road, Raleigh WCPSS will provide workshops on topics including:

  • Kindergarten readiness
  • Elementary literacy
  • Common Core State Standards
  • Understanding Special Education
  • Transitioning into middle and high school  
  • Preparing for college

The workshops will be offered in English and Spanish, with simultaneous interpretation in Arabic, Chinese, French and Korean. Parents will also have a chance to learn more about WCPSS programs and resources including the Magnet Program, Special Education, Counseling and Student Services, School Innovation, English as a Second Language, Academically and Intellectually Gifted education, Title I services, Early Learning, and Career and Technical Education. Community organizations that serve Wake County families will also be at the event.

Parent Academies
Enroll in the WCPSS Parent Academy, a free eight-week series of workshops where parents learn how to navigate the school system, support their children's learning, Common Core, how to have a successful parent-teacher conference, plan for college, and more!

State of the Schools
Wake County students at every grade span made academic gains in 2011-12, according to newly released results from the N.C. Department of Public Instruction. In addition to district-wide increases in proficiency, Economically Disadvantaged students in Wake County demonstrated the highest levels of proficiency in math and reading that they have achieved under the state's current testing model. Non-Economically Disadvantaged students showed impressive gains, as well.
